Goat skin head held in place and tuned by laces. Comes with two beaters, of rattan or split bamboo. Actual weight approximately 6.5 pounds (2.9 Kg).

BLEMISHED: Two-headed wooden deluxe naal drum that is shaped like a barrel with a tenor and bass head. Drum heads are made from goatskin and are held in place and tuned by nuts and bolts. Held horizontally, both heads are played. Nuts can be tuned with a standard wrench, included.

In India, these extremely popular percussion instruments are commonly used in folk music and during marriage ceremonies. Made in New Delhi by skilled craftsmen.

Body: Stained wooden shell with linear etching. Includes a metal handle.

Heads: Bass: This bass consists of a goatskin head with a braid around the edge. It usually has an internal load that adds depth to the sound. When it is applied in India, this load is a dark green-black gob. The head you receive may have this gob in place. However, for longevity, ease of installation and head sound, we recommend replacing the original gob with a layer of silicone caulk. Tenor: The tenor has a goatskin head with a metal ring stitched around the edge and a black gob, or syahi (pronounced cee-hi) on the outer playing surface. This syahi is a unique combination of organics and iron.

BLEMISHED: Hudak Deluxe Talking Drum 8x16 (w BEAL) (Item Code: HUDX-2) Deluxe wooden two-headed "talking" drum with beater. Natural skin heads are held in place, and tuned, by cords. Playing surface on each head is struck by a beater, while the drum is held under the arm and the ropes squeezed to make the drum talk. Great Whaaa-Whaa sounds. 16 inch long, outside diameter of drum is 6 inches, playing surface around 5.5 inches, total diameter of head 8 inches

BLEMISHED: Jori Tabla Set, Brass Nickel Plated Dhamas and 5.75 inch tabla. Pre-dating the common style of tabla, is the older, Jori, style. The Jori, sometimes called the Panjabi Pakhawaj, is said to have been created by Sata & Balwand, two musicians in the court of the Fifth Sikh Guru. According to tradition, they cut a pakhawaj in two creating a pair of drums; Jori translates as pair. The base drum, called dhamma, is tall with nearly parallel sides, and has a smooth head. The player applies a thin layer of chapati dough to the dhamma's head. This thin layer must be removed and re-applied before each session. Only the smaller drum in the Jori, the pura, has the black syahi. The sound generated from the Jori carries well, it is louder and deeper compared to the common tabla set.

BLEMISHED: Jug Drum (Item Code: JUGD-2) Ceramic two hole jug drum, 12" x 12". Played by rapping on the outside, a range of sounds are possible. Please note these are individually hand made and have a variety innate defects such as pitting, surface cracks and unsymmetrical shapes. Color and design varies.

BLEMISHED: Tabla Case, Padded Nylon (Item Code: NCTB-2) This canvas case has one full inch of firm padding on all sides, top and bottom and two adjustable shoulder straps. A 12" x 9" Velcro pocket on the front will hold instruction materials. The case's interior dimensions of 20" L x 11.5" H x 14" W will accommodate a number of instruments. For tabla sets there is a padded, free-floating, insert to separate the two drums. The suite-case style zipper around 3 sides allows the top to open fully for easy access to the interior. The zipper can accommodate a small lock for security (lock not included).

The stainless steel bayan has an attractive finish that is not prone to tarnish. The greater weight of the stainless steel adds to greater stability of the bayan during vigorous play, and creates a fuller richer sound than a non-pro light-weight bayan. The stainless steel is a large step up from an aluminum bayan found in student sets.
