He made his recital debut at fourteen and his concerto debut at seventeen with Beethoven’s Concerto No. 1 at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest; the following year he performed Mozart’s Concerto K. 450 at the Radio-TV Hall in a nationally televised concert. During the summers of 1972–1976 he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with the renowned pianist-conductor Carlo Zecchi, and subsequently completed his studies at the Bucharest State Conservatory with Corneliu Gheorghiu, colleague of the celebrated Dinu Lipatti. After coming to the United States, Mr. Panku earned Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Temple University under the distinguished artist-teacher Harvey Wedeen. He has performed solo recitals and chamber music concerts for more than forty years, appearing at The Ethical Society, The Art Alliance, and Temple University in Philadelphia, and in venues throughout the East Coast. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote of his playing: “This was a thoughtful and introspective ‘Waldstein’, yet one which, despite freely changing tempos, was very carefully controlled.” He has been composing since 1980, with a catalog that includes piano sonatas, preludes and fugues, shorter piano pieces, a fantasy, flute pieces, and a setting of Psalm 23 for choir and organ. His style has evolved from a tonal, Romantic foundation toward an original language incorporating neo-Romantic and modern expressionistic elements, using both tonal and atonal resources. He has taught piano since 1979, serving on the faculties of Temple University, Settlement Music School, Academy of Community Music, and Bryn Mawr Conservatory.
