Beethoven's Most Beloved Slow Movement — Arranged for Viola and Piano

The Adagio cantabile from Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 ("Pathétique") is one of the most achingly beautiful slow movements in all of Western music — a melody of such singing simplicity and emotional depth that it has transcended its origins as a piano work to become a universal expression of lyrical tenderness. This arrangement by Peter Gross presents the Adagio in a transcription for viola and piano, a pairing that brings out the movement's warm, vocal character with particular eloquence. An ideal choice for recitals, chamber concerts, and any program calling for music of intimate beauty.

About Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) was the towering figure of the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era — a composer whose nine symphonies, five piano concertos, sixteen string quartets, and thirty-two piano sonatas form the bedrock of the Western concert repertoire. Born in Bonn, he moved to Vienna in 1792 to study with Haydn and quickly established himself as the foremost pianist and composer of his generation. The Pathétique Sonata (1798–99), composed when Beethoven was in his late twenties, was an immediate sensation and remains one of his most performed and beloved works. Its Adagio cantabile — a movement of extraordinary melodic purity — is among the most recognized themes in all of classical music.
