Beethoven’s Charming Dance — Kontratanz No. 2, Arranged for Concert Band by Marc Oliver
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) composed his set of twelve Kontretänze (Contredanses) around 1800–1802, originally for orchestra. These lively, unpretentious dance pieces reveal a lighter, more playful side of Beethoven that is sometimes overshadowed by his monumental symphonies and sonatas. Kontratanz No. 2 is a bright, bouncy piece with an irresistible rhythmic energy and a melodic charm that makes it immediately appealing to performers and audiences alike. Notably, Beethoven later reused the main theme of one of these contredanses in the finale of his Eroica Symphony — a testament to how much he valued these seemingly simple dance tunes.
This edition presents Kontratanz No. 2 in a concert band arrangement by Marc Oliver. A delightful and accessible addition to any concert program.
