Beethoven's Most Famous Piano Work — First Movement
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) composed his Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2, in 1801. Nicknamed the "Moonlight Sonata" by the poet Ludwig Rellstab, who compared the first movement to moonlight shimmering on Lake Lucerne, it is one of the most famous and beloved pieces of music ever written. The first movement, Adagio sostenuto, is a hypnotic, nocturnal meditation — a quietly pulsing triplet accompaniment beneath a singing, melancholy melody that creates an atmosphere of profound stillness and introspection. Beethoven himself marked it Si deve suonare tutto questo pezzo delicatissimamente e senza sordino — "This whole piece must be played with the utmost delicacy and without damper."
This edition presents the first movement in a print-ready score, ideal for solo performance, educational use, and recital programs.
