Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of the most beloved and frequently performed operas in the world — a work of blazing dramatic intensity, unforgettable melody, and irresistible rhythmic energy that has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1875. Carmen Suite No. 1, drawn from the opera’s most celebrated orchestral passages, distills the essence of Bizet’s genius into a concert suite of extraordinary variety and color: from the swagger of the Prélude and the sultry mystery of the Aragonaise, to the tender lyricism of the Intermezzo and the electrifying drama of the Les Toréadors. This custom engraving by Marc Oliver brings the full splendor of Bizet’s orchestral writing to the concert band in a performance-ready edition of exceptional scope and ambition.

About Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet (1838–1875) was a French composer of the Romantic era whose gift for melody, dramatic instinct, and orchestral color placed him among the most naturally gifted composers of his generation. Carmen, premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in March 1875, was initially met with a mixed reception — but within years of Bizet’s death (just three months after the premiere) it had become one of the most performed operas in the world, a status it has never relinquished. The suite drawn from its orchestral music is among the most vivid and satisfying in the entire operatic repertoire.
