About Léo Delibes
Léo Delibes (1836–1891) was a French composer celebrated for his gift for melody and orchestral color. Best known for his ballets Coppelia and Sylvia, Delibes also composed the opera Lakmé (1883), set in colonial India and centered on the forbidden love between a British officer and the daughter of a Brahmin priest. The Flower Duet — sung by Lakmé and her servant Mallika as they gather flowers by a river — is the opera’s most iconic moment, and its soaring melody has appeared in countless films, advertisements, and concert halls worldwide.
