Mendelssohn's Solemn Slow Movement — Arranged by Peter Gross

Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) composed his Symphony No. 5 in D major, Op. 107, known as the "Reformation" Symphony, in 1830 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession. The slow movement, Andante, is a deeply felt, chorale-like meditation — a movement of quiet dignity and spiritual gravity that reflects Mendelssohn's deep engagement with the Lutheran tradition. The symphony culminates in a finale built on Luther's great hymn Ein feste Burg ("A Mighty Fortress"), and the Andante prepares the listener for that climax with its solemn, reflective character.

This edition presents the Andante in an arrangement by Peter Gross for solo instrument and piano, ideal for recitals and sacred concert programs.

About Felix Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) was one of the most gifted composers of the Romantic era — a prodigy who composed his Octet at sixteen and the Midsummer Night's Dream Overture at seventeen. Born in Hamburg into a distinguished intellectual family, he studied in Berlin and later traveled widely, reviving interest in J. S. Bach's music through his landmark 1829 performance of the St. Matthew Passion. His catalog includes five symphonies, two piano concertos, the violin concerto, the oratorios Elijah and St. Paul, and a wealth of chamber and piano music. The "Reformation" Symphony (1830), though not performed in his lifetime, is a deeply personal work reflecting his Lutheran faith and his reverence for the German musical tradition.
