Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek (1860–1945) composed his comic opera Donna Diana in 1894, and while the opera itself is rarely performed today, its overture has achieved a remarkable afterlife as one of the most recognizable pieces of light classical music in the world. The overture’s bright, confident main theme became famous as the theme music for the long-running American radio program The Lone Ranger (alongside Rossini’s William Tell Overture), and its sparkling energy and memorable melody have kept it a favorite of concert band and orchestra programs for over a century.
