Erik Satie’s Sonatine Bureaucratique (1917) is one of his most delightfully sardonic works — a witty parody of Muzio Clementi’s sonatinas that skewers the pomposity of academic musical convention with Satie’s characteristic deadpan humor. The piece borrows the formal structure and melodic material of Clementi’s Sonatina in C Major, Op. 36, No. 1, then distorts and subverts it with unexpected harmonies, absurdist tempo markings, and Satie’s own ironic commentary written directly into the score.
A favorite among pianists who appreciate wit and intelligence in their repertoire, the Sonatine Bureaucratique is as entertaining to perform as it is to hear. It sits comfortably at an intermediate level and makes a memorable, conversation-starting addition to any recital program.
