About the Composer
Franz Schubert (1797–1828) composed more than 600 songs in his short lifetime of thirty-one years, transforming the German Lied into one of the supreme art forms of the Romantic era. Born in Vienna, he possessed an extraordinary gift for melody and an unmatched ability to illuminate the emotional world of a poem through music. His songs range from the intimate and tender to the dramatic and tragic, and his settings of poets such as Goethe, Schiller, Heine, and Rellstab remain the gold standard of the vocal repertoire. Beyond his songs, Schubert composed symphonies, chamber music, piano works, and choral music of the highest order — including the "Unfinished" Symphony, the Winterreise song cycle, and the String Quintet in C major. Though he died largely unrecognized by the wider public, his music has since come to be regarded as among the most profound and beautiful ever written. This is a digital product.
