John Philip Sousa (1854–1932), the “March King,” was the most celebrated bandmaster and march composer in American history. Over a career spanning six decades, he composed 136 marches — including The Stars and Stripes Forever, the national march of the United States. The Liberty Bell (1893) was composed to celebrate the national tour of the original Liberty Bell and quickly became one of his most popular works. Its fame only grew in the 20th century when it was adopted as the opening theme of Monty Python’s Flying Circus — introducing it to a whole new generation of listeners around the world.
