About Joaquín Valverde
Joaquín Valverde Durán (1846–1910) was a Spanish composer, flutist, and conductor who became one of the most popular figures in the Madrid musical world of the late 19th century. Best known for his enormously successful zarzuelas — particularly La Gran Vía (1886), co-written with Federico Chueca — Valverde also contributed a rich catalog of band and dance music that captured the festive, sun-drenched spirit of Andalusian life. The Cádiz March, named for the ancient port city on Spain’s Atlantic coast, is among his most enduring and widely performed works.
