The World's Most Beloved Christmas Carol — High Voice in E-flat Major
Adolphe Adam (1803–1856) composed Cantique de Noël ("O Holy Night") in 1847, setting a poem by the French poet Placide Cappeau. It is one of the most beloved and emotionally powerful Christmas carols ever written — a soaring, dramatic melody that builds from a quiet, reverent opening to a triumphant, jubilant climax. First performed on Christmas Eve 1847, it was notably the first piece of music ever broadcast on radio (Christmas Eve 1906). The English lyrics most commonly sung today were written by American minister John Sullivan Dwight in 1855. This edition is presented in E-flat major for high voice, with both English and French text, all verses included.
