Arban's Operatic Fantasy on Bellini's Beloved Cavatina
Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825–1889) was deeply inspired by the Italian operatic tradition, and this Fantasie and Variations on a Cavatina by Bellini is a testament to that love. Drawing on the singing, bel canto melodies of Vincenzo Bellini — one of the great opera composers of the 19th century — Arban transforms the lyrical cavatina into a brilliant showpiece for solo cornet or trumpet. The work opens with a richly expressive fantasy that captures the vocal warmth of Bellini's original, before unfolding into a series of increasingly dazzling variations. The result is a piece that demands both a beautiful singing tone and impressive technical command — a true test of the complete brass artist.
