Arban's Brilliant Variations on Bellini's Operatic Masterpiece
Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825–1889), the legendary French cornet virtuoso and pedagogue whose Grande Méthode Complète remains the bible of brass technique to this day, brings his characteristic brilliance to this set of variations on a theme from Bellini's Norma. The opera Norma (1831) is widely regarded as Vincenzo Bellini's greatest achievement, and its celebrated aria "Casta Diva" — a serene, moonlit prayer to the goddess Diana — is one of the most sublime soprano arias in all of opera. Arban seizes on this exquisite melody and transforms it through a series of increasingly dazzling variations that showcase the full expressive and virtuosic range of the solo cornet or trumpet. From the tender, lyrical statement of the theme to the glittering runs, ornaments, and technical fireworks of the later variations, this piece is a masterclass in the art of the variation form — and a spectacular recital showpiece for any advanced brass player.
