🎵 Listen Before You Buy
Hector Berlioz’s Hungarian March (Rákóczi March) from The Damnation of Faust is one of the most electrifying and brilliantly orchestrated pieces in the entire concert repertoire — a thundering, unstoppable march that builds from a whispered opening to a blazing, triumphant conclusion of irresistible power. Based on the traditional Hungarian Rákóczi March, Berlioz’s orchestration transforms it into something altogether spectacular: a showpiece of orchestral virtuosity that never fails to bring an audience to its feet. About Hector Berlioz
Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) was the towering figure of French Romantic music — a composer of visionary imagination, revolutionary orchestration, and dramatic ambition on a scale that few of his contemporaries could match. His dramatic legend The Damnation of Faust (1846), based on Goethe’s Faust, is one of his most celebrated works. The Hungarian March — inserted into the score when Berlioz set part of the action in Hungary — became independently famous almost immediately after its premiere in Budapest in 1846, where it reportedly caused a sensation. It remains one of the most performed and beloved of all Berlioz’s orchestral pieces.
