About Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) was one of the towering figures of the Romantic era — a composer of symphonies, chamber music, and choral works of extraordinary depth and craftsmanship. His Hungarian Dances (published 1869–1880) were inspired by the Hungarian Romani music he encountered through his friendship with violinist Eduard Remenyi. Originally written for piano four hands, they became some of the most popular pieces Brahms ever wrote. Hungarian Dance No. 5 — the most famous of the set — was later orchestrated by Martin Schmitt and has since become a staple of orchestras, bands, and ensembles worldwide.
