🎵 Listen Before You Buy

Solomon’s Colonnade by James Michael Creider is an original concert band composition of architectural grandeur and musical substance. The title evokes the magnificent colonnaded portico of Solomon’s Temple — a place of gathering, proclamation, and spiritual significance — and the music reflects this imagery with stately, processional themes, rich harmonic writing, and a sense of ceremonial purpose that makes it ideal for formal concert programs and sacred-themed events. Creider’s writing for concert band is idiomatic and effective, drawing on the full expressive range of the ensemble to create a work of genuine musical depth and immediate audience appeal.

About the Composer

James Michael Creider (1945–2019) came to concert band composition by one of the most distinctive paths in the repertoire. After seven years in the U.S. Navy’s submarine service as a sonar technician, he earned a BS in journalism from Oklahoma State University in 1976 — but music never left him. Forty years after his first attempt at a music degree, he returned to his roots in 2006 with the purchase of a bass clarinet, the instrument he had played in public schools in Tulsa and in the OSU marching and concert bands. He began by transcribing cello and bass parts for his own use in the orchestra at First Baptist Church of Allen, Texas — and from there, almost on a whim, began composing original music for concert band.

He never stopped. The McKinney Community Band premiered three of his works: The Trumpeter, The Hills of Heaven, and Benedictio Nocturnum. Over the years he performed with the Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Richardson, and Allen Community Bands, and later with the OBU/Shawnee Community Orchestra while studying composition privately with Professor James Vernon at Oklahoma Baptist University. He was a member of the Association of Concert Bands and played bass clarinet in the orchestra of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
