🎵 Listen Before You Buy

César Franck’s Cantabile is one of the most serene and deeply felt pieces in the organ repertoire — a sustained, singing melody of extraordinary tenderness that seems to float above the world in a state of pure contemplation. Originally composed for organ, its vocal quality and spiritual depth make it a natural fit for ensemble transcription. This edition, arranged by James Wagner, brings Franck’s luminous Cantabile to a new medium with sensitivity and care, preserving every nuance of the original’s quiet eloquence.

About César Franck

César Franck (1822–1890) was a Belgian-French composer and organist whose deeply spiritual music and harmonic originality made him one of the most influential figures of the late Romantic era. His organ works — including the Trois Pièces, of which the Cantabile is the central movement — are cornerstones of the instrument’s repertoire, celebrated for their meditative depth, rich chromatic harmony, and sustained melodic beauty.

About the Arranger

James Wagner (1950–2026) brought to his arrangements a lifetime of immersion in sacred music, organ performance, and choral direction. He served for more than thirty years as a church musician, most recently as Music Director and Organist at First Congregational Church of Wayne, Michigan — a position he held for eleven years before being granted emeritus status upon his retirement in 2016. His organ studies were with Marilyn Mason, Michael Burkhardt, Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, and Mary Ida Yost; his composition studies with Anthony Iannaccone, Daniel Eller, and James Aikman. His original works include Suite in G for harpsichord or piano, Fanfare/Overture to Life for Concert Band, the opera Anastasia, and Ten Meditations on the Entrance into Eternity for Chorus, Soloists, Organ, and Two Saxophones. He also performed percussion and keyboards with the Washtenaw Community Concert Band, which he occasionally conducted as Assistant Director.
