About Julius Fučík
Julius Fučík (1872–1916) was a Czech composer and bandmaster whose catalog of marches and character pieces made him one of the most gifted Bohemian composers of his era. Entry of the Gladiators (1897), originally titled Grande Marche Chromatique, was intended as a serious concert march — but its irresistible energy and chromatic swagger were quickly adopted by circus bands, and it has been synonymous with the big top ever since. Fučík could scarcely have imagined that this single march would make him one of the most-heard composers in the world.
