A Magnificent Renaissance Canzona — Arranged by Zak Rahal

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554–1612) was the greatest composer of the Venetian School and one of the most innovative and influential figures in the history of Western music. As organist at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, he pioneered the use of multiple choirs of instruments and voices placed in different parts of the building — the technique known as cori spezzati (“divided choirs”) — creating a revolutionary spatial and antiphonal style that transformed the sound of sacred music. His Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2 is one of his most celebrated works — a magnificent, ceremonial canzona for multiple brass choirs that showcases his mastery of antiphonal writing and his gift for bold, resonant harmonic color.

This edition presents the Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2 in an arrangement by Zak Rahal, a Detroit-area trombonist and brass arranger who has performed under Leonard Slatkin and Giancarlo Guerrero with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra 2. Ideal for brass ensembles, sacred concerts, and ceremonial programs.
