About Edwin Franko Goldman

Edwin Franko Goldman (1878–1956) was one of the most influential figures in American band history — a composer, conductor, and tireless advocate for the concert band as a serious artistic medium. He founded the Goldman Band in New York City in 1911, which gave free outdoor concerts on the Great Lawn of Central Park for decades, bringing band music to hundreds of thousands of listeners. As a composer, Goldman wrote over 100 marches, of which On the Mall and The Chimes of Liberty are among the most beloved. His legacy helped elevate the American concert band to the respected institution it is today.
