Halvorsen’s Elegant Suite in the Old Style — Arranged by Mike Shaw
Johan Halvorsen (1864–1935) was a Norwegian composer, violinist, and conductor who played a central role in Norwegian musical life during the late Romantic era. He was a close friend and brother-in-law of Edvard Grieg, and his music shares Grieg’s gift for melodic beauty and national character. The Suite Ancienne (“Suite in the Old Style”) is one of Halvorsen’s most charming works — a set of elegant, dance-inspired movements written in the manner of Baroque and early Classical dance suites, with a graceful, refined character that belies its late Romantic origins.
This edition presents the Suite Ancienne in an arrangement by Mike Shaw, adapted for concert band. A delightful and relatively rare work that rewards both performers and audiences.
