About Franz Liszt
Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer and pianist widely regarded as the greatest piano virtuoso of the 19th century. His Hungarian Rhapsodies — nineteen in total — drew on the verbunkos style of Hungarian Romani music to create works of extraordinary color, drama, and technical demand. Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (1847), the most famous of the set, follows the traditional two-part structure of slow lassan and fast friska, building from introspective grandeur to an electrifying, unstoppable finale.
