About Franz Liszt

Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer and pianist widely regarded as the greatest piano virtuoso of the 19th century. His Hungarian Rhapsodies — nineteen in total — drew on the verbunkos style of Hungarian Romani music to create works of extraordinary color, drama, and technical demand. Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (1847), the most famous of the set, follows the traditional two-part structure of slow lassan and fast friska, building from introspective grandeur to an electrifying, unstoppable finale. Its fame has only grown over the decades, cemented by appearances in Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and countless concert hall encores worldwide.
