Calixa Lavallée

Canada's National Anthem — A Musical Treasure

"O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada, with music composed by Calixa Lavallée (1842–1891) and original French lyrics by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. It was first performed on June 24, 1880, in Quebec City at a banquet for the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. The English lyrics most commonly sung today were written by Robert Stanley Weir in 1908. After more than a century of widespread use, "O Canada" was officially proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980 — exactly 100 years after its premiere.

Calixa Lavallée was one of Canada's most distinguished nineteenth-century musicians — a pianist, conductor, and composer who studied in Paris and performed throughout North America. His setting of "O Canada" is a proud, stirring melody of great dignity and warmth, perfectly capturing the spirit of a nation.
