Rossini’s Most Dramatic Overture — Arranged for Concert Band by Marc Oliver
Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) composed the overture to La gazza ladra (“The Thieving Magpie”) in 1817. It is one of the most dramatic and exciting overtures in the operatic repertoire — opening with a famous double snare drum roll before launching into a series of brilliant, energetic themes that showcase Rossini’s mastery of orchestral momentum and theatrical excitement. The overture has taken on a life far beyond the opera house, most famously as the opening music of Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange, which introduced it to a new generation of listeners worldwide.
This edition presents the overture in a concert band arrangement by Marc Oliver. A dramatic and electrifying addition to any concert program.
