Franz Schubert (1797–1828) composed more than 600 songs in his short lifetime of thirty-one years, transforming the German Lied into one of the supreme art forms of the Romantic era. Franz Schubert (1797–1828) composed Herbst ("Autumn") in 1828, the final year of his life, setting a poem by Ludwig Rellstab.
