About Jean Sibelius
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) was Finland's greatest composer and one of the towering figures of late Romantic nationalism. Born in Hämeenlinna, he studied in Helsinki, Berlin, and Vienna before returning to Finland, where his music became inseparable from the Finnish national identity. His seven symphonies, the violin concerto, and the tone poems Finlandia, En saga, and Tapiola are cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire. Finlandia (1899), composed as a protest against Russian censorship, became a symbol of Finnish resistance and independence; its central hymn melody — now known worldwide as "Be Still My Soul" — is among the most recognized and beloved tunes in all of music.
