About Jean Sibelius
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) was Finland's greatest composer and one of the towering figures of late Romantic music. Finlandia (1899) was composed during a period of intense Russian censorship of Finnish culture, and its premiere was a defiant act of national expression. So powerful was its effect that the Russian authorities banned its performance in Finland for a time.
