About the Music
The melody of The Star-Spangled Banner derives from To Anacreon in Heaven, a popular British club song composed by John Stafford Smith (1750–1836). Francis Scott Key wrote the words in 1814 after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The song was officially adopted as the U.S. national anthem by Congress in 1931.
