About Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was Russia’s greatest composer and one of the towering figures of the Romantic era. His three ballets — Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty — are the cornerstones of the classical ballet repertoire and among the most performed orchestral works in the world. Sleeping Beauty (1890), based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault, features some of Tchaikovsky’s most inspired and opulent writing. The waltz from Act I is the ballet’s most celebrated excerpt — a melody of such natural grace and warmth that it seems to have always existed.
