The English horn — the alto member of the oboe family — is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and expressive instruments in the orchestra, its rich, reedy tone capable of a depth of feeling that few other instruments can match. From Dvořák’s New World Symphony to Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, the English horn has long been the instrument of choice for music of longing, mystery, and profound emotion.
Eudoxia Ypsilanti’s Antithesis is an original work that explores the full expressive range of the English horn, its title suggesting a play of contrasts — light and shadow, tension and release, lyrical warmth and dramatic intensity. It is a compelling and distinctive piece that gives the English horn a rare opportunity to step into the spotlight as a solo voice of real character and depth.
